Filming a Driveway Pour on a Squirrel Hill Slope: Slump, Finish and the Weather Window

The driveway on Northumberland Street in Squirrel Hill has a 14 percent grade for its first 22 feet, then flattens into an apron at the garage. In March 2024, the homeowner was replacing a badly cracked slab that had heaved over two winters and thrown the garage door out of alignment. Setting up for a sloped pour

I ran two cameras. One went on a pole mount at the top of the grade, aimed down-slope from 9 feet, covering the pour and screed from above. The second went on a tripod on the sidewalk, aimed across the slope at the grade-to-apron transition, because that joint is where blowouts happen on steep pours. Both ran continuously. The pole mount was a paint pole with a ball head clamped near the top and a sandbag on the base — about $35 — positioned without a ladder and without standing in the pour zone. On any documentation shoot, be invisible to the work: a tripod in the pour zone gets moved, and the record has a gap.

Reading the pour to know what to capture

The crew placed from a chute, not a pump: truck backed to the garage end, chute ran down-slope, concrete flowed toward the sidewalk under gravity. The screed rail on the high side is critical — if it moves, the slab runs thick on one side. I kept the down-slope camera aimed at that rail for the first 20 minutes.

Slump is worth documenting when you can. The crew ran a cone test before the pour; I photographed it with the measurement called out on audio: 4.5 inches. If the driveway cracks later and the owner claims mix quality, the slump at placement is on record.

The weather window and why it matters on film

March in Pittsburgh means the weather window for a driveway pour is short. This pour went in on a morning forecast clear through noon with a front by 3 p.m. The crew started at 7:30 a.m. Finishing — bull floating, edging, brooming, sealing — was done by 12:40 p.m. The rain started at 1:15.

I kept timestamps on every stage: first chute placement, screed pass, bull float pass, edging, broom finish, curing compound. The timestamps are in the video’s audio track and in a separate text file. Rain on fresh concrete during or after the finish stage can cause surface scaling. The time-lapse and what it showed beyond the pour

That clip shows something the crew did not notice: at the apron transition, the concrete settled about a quarter-inch in the 8 minutes between the screed pass and the bull float — visible in the shadows cast by the screed rail. The contractor said it was within normal bleed-water behavior. Whether or not that is true, it is documented. If the slope-to-apron joint ever cracks, the time-lapse establishes whether settlement was present at pour.
